Regal Cinemas has announced that they will be offering 14,000 free tickets for those U.S. veterans and active-duty service members who wish to see First Man this weekend. 500 Regal theaters will offer free tickets to the first 25 service members (retired or active) who show up with Military ID to the first screenings taking place on Oct. 11. These screenings will start at approximately 7p.
My Personal Experience: Regal Cinema delivered as promised, but I am not sure of how well they were with putting the message out. I found out about this offer the day before the films release by word of mouth from my boss. I actually thought the first showings would be too early in the morning and there would be no way I would be able to see this film. What happened here was a chance encounter with my roommates, as I got off work at 5am and decided to stay up watching a few movies and told them about this offer as they were making breakfast before work, they asked the times of the first showings and that is when I found out the first showings were actually later in the evening at 7p. I then took it upon myself to put this blog post up, as well as try to drum up some interest through my friends with Facebook.
Anyways, after the chance encounter in the morning, my roommates and I decided we should see if we could score some free tix. Regal Cinemas made this process easy, we showed up and presented our military ID's and that was that, tickets were printed and we were in.
First Man itself was a sight to behold. I think the filmmakers clearly were more excited about showing off space and the astronauts side of things like no other film I have ever experienced, more than they were concerned with the regular life aspects of the astronauts, but that does not mean the film was bad or dragged on. There is just a clear creative disconnect between what we see when the astronauts are doing work or solo things compared to when they are with their family or having one on one conversations away from their work environment, its quite clear and decisive. The other aspects of First Man put you right into things with the astronauts, you feel like you are going to be stuck in space, you feel their triumphs, and you are moved with their failures. I recommend this film, it will move you in some way. Thank you Regal Cinemas for the free ticket!
